Why a work permit is required

Foreign nationals who want to work in Northern Cyprus need a work permit. The application is usually made by the employer, who declares that they will employ you.

The process and the documents required can change over time. Confirm the current requirements with the relevant official body or your employer's HR team before you apply.

What to check in a contract

Ask for a written contract rather than a verbal agreement. A contract sets out each side's obligations and the terms.

  • Job title and duties
  • Salary and pay period
  • Working hours and the working week
  • Any probation period and how long it lasts
  • Annual paid leave entitlement
  • Termination terms and notice period

Working hours and overtime

Normal weekly working hours and overtime rules in Northern Cyprus are set by legislation, and overtime is generally paid at a multiple of the normal rate.

Agree your weekly pattern and the overtime expectation when you start. In tourism, retail and hospitality, seasonal peaks can shift working hours.

Leave entitlements

Employees have statutory rights including annual paid leave, sick leave and maternity leave. The duration can vary with length of service and sector.

Requesting leave in writing and getting approval makes planning easier for both sides.

Pay and deductions

Gross pay and take-home pay differ. Before you start, ask what the gross salary is, what the statutory deductions are and what the net payment will be.

Find out which day pay is made and how (a bank transfer, for example) so a delay later does not come as a surprise.
